Aiken Driving Calendar for 2012: Thank you to Renie Gillis of www.gilcrestfarm.com for compiling a calendar of driving activities from now until June, 2012. Click here to see the calendar, or find the Aiken Driving Calendar link on the left of this page.
November 2011: We are home from our World Championship trip. Cooper is on a brief vacation and doing an ocassional trail ride. You can read about our trip on the blog, http://catalystdriving.blogspot.com/, but the short story is that the US Team won the Bronze Medal and individual driver Suzy Stafford won the Bronze individual medal. It was a very successful trip for all our drivers. Cooper won the bronze dressage medal and we finished eleventh overall. Cooper and I now have two Bronze Team medals.
America's Favorite Equestrian Contest: Equus Foundation ran a contest with the United States Equestrian Federation in which they chose six equestrians from eight FEI disciplines. I was one of the six drivers nominated. After several elimination rounds, it was just announced that I was the winning driver. Equus Foundation will make a donation to the USEF for driving. You can read more here:

I am working with students and some new training horses for the winter. Congratulations to a successful Katydid CDE to students Arnie Brooks, Ray Mansur and Sherri Dolan! We had perfect Aiken weather for Katydid. Congratulations to Scott Monroe and his Morgan Shadow, the new National Champion in the Single Horse division. It's good to see another Morgan National Champion!

June 2011: Many thanks to Nancy Francis and Peggy Dils for hosting a fundraiser for us and Janelle Marshall. A short dressage lesson, a cones course run and a safari scavenger hunt followed by a yummy lunch made for great fun for all participants. Thanks to those who volunteered and contributed, it is greatly appreciated!
May, 2011: Fundraiser for Team Catalyst on May 18th at Gilcrest Farm. Thanks to Irene Gillis and everyone who helped out!
April, 2011: We attended the Southern Pines CDE April 15-17, doing dressage and cones but did not do the marathon per the advice of US Team coach Michael Freund. Cooper won dressage. Congrats to Janelle Marshall who won the class. Fran navigated for Janelle on the marathon. Dottie Paul once again rode as groom for us in dressage. Congratulations to Irene Gillis who won a big competitive Preliminary Single Pony class. Arnie Brooks also placed well in this class with his new pony in their first time at Prelim.
2011 USEF National Champions!!
March, 2011: Just home from the 2011 Live Oak International CDE in Ocala, FL, March 24-27. The weather was perfect, though a bit warm on marathon day. Cooper was a star, winning dressage and having some good hazard times, but some slow ones as well, but maintaining our lead after marathon. Cones were challenging but he went great, clear with 1.61 time penalties, to win the 2011 USEF National Driving Championships. We had the best score in the FEI division, and Cooper won the Hanzi Award, for the best horse in the competition in the judge's opinion. Cooper also won the Hanzi Award last year. This was his third National Championship win.
Special thanks to Irene Gillis, Dottie Paul and Sue Dougherty for their help at the show, and to Jack Wetzel for the loan of his presentation carriage. Mega thanks to Irene Schoen for her ongoing help and support!
Cooper will have a bit of a rest and then we are on to the Southern Pines CDE in mid April, the last American selection trial for the World Pony Driving Championships.
Congratulations to all the Aiken drivers who did great at Live Oak, probably due to the large Aiken/Windsor cheering section that came to support all of us. More info and links on my blog, link below.
February, 2011: We competed with Cooper at the Little Everglades CDE in Dade City, FL. A bit rusty for our first show with a single since the Laurels in September, but we won dressage and had a decent marathon. Cones knocked us down from second to a close third. Cones practice is now a priority!
We have completed our move to Windsor, South Carolina and are here full time and loving it! Welcome to Catalyst Driving Sponsor, Leather Therapy! We have used the great Leather Therapy products on our harness and tack for many years, and also use their Saddle Pad and Blanket Wash and Rinse products on our horse laundry, from wraps to blankets. A big plus for the Leather Therapy Wash and Restorer/Conditioner is that it retards mold and mildew. Many thanks to Ralph Conner for the YouTube video of Cooper in the water obstacle, and to Diana Rowland for her wonderful photos, all from the Laurels. September, 2010: Just back from the Laurels at Landhope International Combined Driving Event, and USEF National Pony Championship. Cooper is the 2010 National Champion and had the best Advanced score of the event. Cooper went well throughout all three days of competition, winning dressage and having solid marathon and cones runs. A highlight of the weekend was Fran and Shelly riding on the back of Jack Wetzel's four in hand, driven by Bill Long, in a marathon schooling session in preparation for the World Equestrian Games. Welcome and many thanks to sponsor Kentucky Equine Research! www.ker.com We use KER products daily and are proud to have their support. Check out their website for wonderful products and access to nutrition research.
August, 2010: Shelly, Cooper and Harry attended the USEF Training Session for Long-listed Drivers/Young Drivers Camp in Southern Pines, NC, August 24, 25, and worked with Peter Tischer. Shelly enjoyed worked with young drivers Jacob Arnold and Rachel Laufer. Many thanks to Jamie O'Rourke for organizing the clinic and Claire Reid and Kelly Valdes for hosting us! Thank you to Sheetz for their sponsorship. We stop at Sheetz often while traveling, great sandwiches to order and FAST! www.sheetz.com Kombat Boots is a sponsor of Catalyst Driving. See http://www.kombatboots.com for information about their pelleted yeast supplement. It helps your horse digest and utilize feed more efficently, reduces the amount of lactic acid in the horse's system during exercise, and guards against hind gut ulcers. Horses love the taste and it's great for their coat and hooves. It's given to all the horses at Catalyst. Shelly is pleased to welcome sponsor Charles Owen, Inc. Charles Owen makes the best protective gear including helmets and vests, as well as many other great products, and Shelly is proud to wear them daily. Read more at www.charlesowen.comAugust, 2010: Just back from the Iron Horse CDE in Caledonia, IL. Cooper won the Advanced Single Pony class with the best FEI score of the competition. The facility of Ron and Joanne Swenson was beautiful and the hazards were very impressive. Rainy weather the night before the marathon made the course tough but the hazards held up well. Aiken was well represented by a number of drivers making the long trek. Eleven four in hand drivers participated in the last selection trial for the World Equestrian Games and it was exciting to see them throughout the weekend. Photos and more info about the show are on http://drivingdigest.wordpress.com/
Next stop for Cooper and Shelly is the USEF National Championships at the Laurels at Landhope CDE in September www.laurelscde.com

MORE NEWS:
Shelly gave an American Driving Society Webinar on Driven Dressage Basics in April. It is posted on www.americandrivingsociety.org and can be seen thre in it's entirety. Lots of good questions were asked and over 300 people were logged on for the live Webinar. Some people even had Webinar parties and watched it with their friends! Another Webinar is planned for the future, will post info here when it is scheduled.
Shelly and Cooper competed at the Live Oak International CDE in March. In the Advanced Single Pony division, they placed first in dressage and first in the marathon, and were ready to compete in the cones class when a thunderstorm caused the last two divisions of the cones competition to be canceled. The classes were placed as they stood so they won the class.
Cooper won the Hanzi Award at the Live Oak International CDE, which is awarded to the best horse in the competition in the opinion of the judges. With five top international judges, this was a real honor!
Catalyst students did well at the Southern Pines CDE held in April. Lynn Legg with Curry, Mary Clark Lind with Flirt and Tunny, Claudia DeLorme with Flag, Claire Glenn with Stella, Irene Gillis with Coffee and Rich Forfa with Freida all were successful and enjoyed the beautiful weekend. Results are available on www.drivingnews.us. Mike Arnold has a done a great job with that website and has tons of links to all things driving.
Aiken is still a hotbed of driving with many activities still on the calendar, see www.aikendrivingclub.com for more info.
The Driving Forum was great with over 1600 driving enthusiasts participating. Shelly presented a dressage lecture and got to meet a lot of nice people. www.driving-forum.com will take place again in 2012.
The Carriage Barn will be hosting a series of clinics with Shelly in New Hampshire. Visit www.carriage-barn.com to find out more.
